This project is designed to let you practice and refine your soldering skills.  Before starting we recommend you read our article:  How To Solder: An introduction to Soldering

Kit Contents

Verify that you have all of the components needed to complete this project.  Included in the kit are the following items:

  • Flashlight PCB Board
  • Battery Holder
  • Tactile Switch
  • LED light
  • CR 2032 Battery

Assembly

  1. Fit the battery holder onto the top of the PCB Board.  The battery holder should be position so that the open end is towards.

    Turn the board over and solder all 4 pins onto the bottom of the PCB.
  2.  Place the tactile switch on the top of the PCB board.  The metal tabs on the sides of the switch should point towards the sides of the PCB.
     
    Turn the board over and solder all 4 pins onto the bottom of the PCB.
  3.  Place the LED light  on the top of the PCB board.  The LED light will only allow the current to flow in one direction so it is important to properly place this part. 
    There are two ways to align the LED:

    1. The LED will have a flat edge that goes towards the (-) side of the circuit.  The top of the PCB illustrates which direction the flat edge goes towards.
    2. One of the legs of the LED is longer than the other.  The longer leg goes towards the (+) side of the circuit.  The top of the PCB has a + printed on this side.
  4. Push the LED legs through the PCB board, leaving enough on top so that you can bend the led down so that it points out from the end of the PCB.

    Bend down the LED, turn over the board and solder the legs onto the bottom of the board.

    After soldering the legs, you will need to trim off the excess.
  5. Your flashlight is now done!  Insert the battery positive side up and try it out.
